Alone

I'm alone with my thoughts
In the midst of a crowd
With a smile on my lips
And a heart that is bowed...
With quick words on my tongue
In answer to jest
Holding back bitter tears
For the one I love best...
The mocking birds song
May still be as sweet
As he warbles at dawn
His loved ones to greet...
But his carol so lovely
I once thought to be
Has changed and no more
Is sweet music to me...
The flowers of Spring
Once so bright to my eye
Are now left to wither
As their gay colors die...
And the hills in the Autumn
Warm in scarlet and gold
Have lost their allure
And are silent and cold...
At night I lie down
On my pallet to sleep
My pillow oft' wet
With the tears that I weep...
And I lie through the night
Until break of dawn
My heart full of longing
For the one who is gone...
There's no joy in my heart
And no hope in my soul
For my loved one's return
As the years onward roll...
So I pray for the time
When my heart beats will cease
And I go to my Father
To find lasting peace.

Drifting

When the summer sun is setting
And the evening sky is red
When the peaceful day is ending
And the clouds drift overhead...
Then I think of happy hours
That I spent when by your side
And the pain that came at parting
When my heart within me died...
Weary days have been my portion
Restless nights have been my due
For I know that while I'm living
All my life belongs to you...
And the peace that comes to others
To myself has been denied
For I'm ever thinking of you
Since my heart within me died...
So in days to come remember
You may always call on me
I will always gladly answer
Makes no difference where I be...
Just to be of comfort to you
All my life is set aside
That is all I have to live for
Since my heart within me died.

Betrayed

Love, the brute with his toothy grin
Set a trap and I wandered in
Baited his trap with friendliness
Covered it over with nothing less
Than "emancipation" and "modernization"
And hung up a sign reading "equal nation"
Hid himself behind a tree
And watched his trap get a hold of me
Waited until he had me bound
Then laughed in his teeth at me, the hound!

Too Busy

Maybe I'll never have
Someone I can count on,
Who rides a white horse
That I too can mount on...

Someone who sees things
The same way as me,
Who loves simple natures
Whatever they be...

A sunrise in morning
Or sunset at night,
The smell of a rose
An eagle in flight...

A walk in the rain
The sparkle of dew,
A swing in the park
Or picnic for two...

Man complicates life
In earning a buck,
Too busy for pleasures
And fresh out of luck!

To Remember When

Am wide awake
But want to sleep,
Got a date
I want to keep.

You are there
Where am I?
Just lying here
I wonder why?

Years have past
Some good, some bad,
Need to dream
Of what I had.

Hand in hand
Along the beach
You were there
Within my reach!

When you left
I died inside,
And there was
No place to hide.

Nothings changed
My burning yen,
So I'm laying here
To remember when!
